In many communities, child protection is often discussed in terms of awareness, laws, and response mechanisms. But in Bangem, recent community engagement activities with young single mothers revealed a deeper reality: vulnerability often begins with the absence of the most basic necessities.
For many mothers, survival is a daily struggle. The inability to afford simple hygiene materials such as soap, detergent, or other household essentials can expose both women and children to serious risks. Children may experience neglect, not because they are unloved, but because poverty limits a caregiver’s ability to provide even the most basic care. At the same time, young mothers become increasingly vulnerable to manipulation, dependency, and sexual exploitation in exchange for support.
This reality highlights an important truth: poverty and vulnerability are closely linked.
Recognizing this, Visionary Care Foundation (VCF), in partnership with the Subdivisional Delegation of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Bangem, supported children of young single mothers with essential hygiene materials and basic items.
The initiative was not simply an act of charity. It was part of a broader protection and prevention strategy aimed at reducing conditions that expose women and children to exploitation, abuse, and neglect.
At VCF Cameroon, we believe that effective child protection must go beyond awareness campaigns. While educating communities and children about abuse and exploitation remains essential, prevention must also address the underlying vulnerabilities that place people at risk in the first place.
By meeting basic needs, communities can strengthen dignity, resilience, and safety for vulnerable families.
Because sometimes, protecting a child begins with something as simple as a bar of soap.
True protection is not only about responding to violence after it occurs, it is about creating conditions where violence becomes less likely to happen.
A Shared Responsibility
VCF Cameroon remains committed to community-based prevention approaches that empower women, protect children, and strengthen vulnerable families through practical and sustainable support.
Every child deserves dignity.
Every mother deserves support.
And every community has a role to play in prevention.
