Celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child – 2025 in Bangem.

When political instability forced the postponement of activities to commemorate this year’s International Day of the Girl Child in Bangem, many feared the celebration might never happen. But for the young people and community leaders of this hospitable mountainous town in Cameroon’s South-West Region, their determination could not be silenced.

On October 30, 2025, Visionary Care Foundation (VCF) Cameroon proudly gathered 40 participants; 25 girls and 15 boys, to finally mark the day under the global theme, “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being.” What unfolded was more than a postponed event; it was a renewed commitment to education, leadership, and equality.

A Day of Learning, Sharing, and Inspiration

The celebration began with warm words from the Mayor of Bangem Municipality, Mr. Ekungwe Christopher kang, who praised VCF Cameroon for its dedication to empowering girls and promoting equal opportunities. Representatives from the Divisional and Sub-divisional Delegations of Women’s Empowerment and the Family joined the call for continued collaboration in advancing girls’ rights.

The day’s sessions were designed to inspire, educate, and build confidence.
Facilitators from VCF Cameroon led dynamic discussions on leadership, confidence, menstrual hygiene management, and gender equality. Girls were encouraged to see themselves as leaders in their schools and communities, while boys were challenged to become allies and advocates for equality.

In a powerful symbolic act, several boys and male community leaders wrote personal pledges to support and respect girls’ rights – proving that true equality begins with shared understanding and responsibility.

Stories that Inspire Change

One of the most touching moments came when a young participant shared her experience:

I had just 10 exercise books out of 16 needed, so I had to share one for two subjects. With this support, I’ll be able to copy my notes in a more organized way, and reading them will be easier.”

Her words captured the reality faced by many children in Bangem, where limited resources often threaten their education. Her gratitude also reminded everyone present that even small acts of support can create lasting impact.

Empowering Through Practical Support

To ensure that empowerment extended beyond the day’s discussions, VCF Cameroon distributed educational kits containing exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers, and sanitary pads to all participating girls. These materials not only lighten the financial burden on parents but also help girls stay in school with confidence and dignity.

Participants later broke into small reflection groups to discuss what gender equality means to them. Their messages – filled with hope, respect, and determination – reflected a growing awareness that every child, regardless of gender, has a role in building inclusive communities.

Impact and Reflections

By the close of the event, the atmosphere was filled with optimism.

The presence of government officials and local authorities strengthened collaboration, opening doors for continued mentorship, advocacy, and support programs in the region.

Overcoming Challenges Together

Despite delays caused by security challenges and limited resources, the event’s success proved that determination and partnership can overcome even the toughest circumstances. Some parents initially hesitated to allow their daughters to attend, but after seeing the event’s impact, many expressed pride and appreciation for the opportunity.

Looking Ahead

The celebration in Bangem reaffirmed a powerful truth: when we invest in girls, we invest in the future of our communities.

VCF Cameroon remains committed to expanding gender empowerment programs in rural and crisis-affected areas, strengthening partnerships with schools and councils, and creating peer clubs where boys and girls can continue conversations on leadership and equality.

What began as a postponed celebration ended as a reminder of resilience – and a promise that every girl, no matter where she lives, deserves the chance to learn, lead, and thrive.
